Stump Grinding.

Below ground stump removal with narrow access machinery. No chemicals, no waiting around. Ground left ready for returf, patio, or replanting.

After the grind

Ground ready to use.

Backfilled by default. Grindings go back into the hole as backfill. Settles over 3 to 6 months, so wait before laying turf.

Or removed entirely. Laying a patio or path straight away? We'll take the grindings away. Small disposal charge.

Or kept as mulch. Fresh wood chip is decent mulch for flower beds. We'll leave it where you want it.

How it works

A grind, step by step.

Most domestic stumps are done within a couple of hours, and the garden is usable again the same day.

Mark out and check

We check the area for cables, pipes and irrigation before the machine starts, and agree the finished level with you.

Grind below grade

The cutter wheel takes the stump down 200 to 300mm below ground as standard. Deeper if you are replanting or building over it.

Chips dealt with

Grinding produces a mound of chip. We backfill the hole with it, or take it away and bring topsoil, whichever you prefer.

Levelled and finished

The area is raked level and left ready for turf, planting or paving. You would never know the tree was there.

Why grinding

Grinding against the alternatives.

There are three ways to deal with a stump. Only one of them gives you your garden back the same day.

What we do

Grind it out

  • Done in hours, not years
  • No chemicals in your soil
  • Replant or returf straight away
  • Fits through a standard gate
  • Fixed price, agreed up front

Dig it out

  • Needs an excavator and access for it
  • Leaves a serious hole
  • Lawns and drives usually suffer
  • Costs far more than grinding

Chemical rotting

  • Takes years, often fails
  • Repeat treatments needed
  • Nothing can be planted there
  • The stump sits there the whole time
Common questions

Stump grinding, answered.

How deep do you grind?

As standard we go 200 to 300mm below ground level, which is enough for turf, beds and most planting. If you are replanting a tree in the same spot or building over the area, we grind deeper. Just tell us the plan when we visit.

Can the tree grow back?

No. Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root system, which is what regrowth comes from. Some species can throw suckers from remaining roots for a season, and we will tell you if yours is one of them and what to do about it.

Will the machine fit in my garden?

Our grinder is 30 inches wide, so it fits through a standard garden gate and down a side passage. No diggers, no dismantled fences, no churned up driveway.

What happens to all the chip?

Your choice. We can backfill the hole with it and mound it slightly to allow for settling, or remove it entirely and leave the area ready for topsoil. Plenty of customers keep it as free mulch.

Do you need to have removed the tree?

Not at all. We grind stumps from trees felled years ago, by other firms, or by storms. If we are removing the tree as well, we price the fell and the grind as one job.
